    Testing VHF Emergency DSC

I spent some time researching how to test
the emergency functionality of the new
DSC VHF radio, working in conjunction with
the folks at Jensen Electronics in Warrenton.

USCG/Group Astoria says they are not yet
    monitoring the emergency function.

Jensen recommended putting a dummy load
in place of the antenna, thus minimizing the
broadcast capability of the radio, and then
testing to see whether a second DSC radio
located nearby receives the emergency signal.

Unlike the testing of EPIRBS, there is not
yet a clear process defined. I would expect
that there will be a process when USCG
    brings up the DSC-enabled emergency
    capability.

    Kind regards,

    David King

    Re: Testing VHF Emergency DSC

The Coast Guard is installing an inhanced communications system called Rescue 21 that incorporates DSC radio into a new multi functional system that will increase our ability to locate vessels within 20NM of shore. http://www.uscg.mil/rescue21/about/cap.htm

The system is functional in the Puget Sound but will not be fully operational along the soutern Washington and Oregon Coasts until later this next year.

The best way to test the emergency button is by NOT using the button at all. Instead, use a friend who has DSC and call his station using his MMSI number. If you can exchange DSC calls, then the DSC emergency button should work in the event of an emergency.
